By Shirley, Red Kite Champion

I first got involved when Nadine, my Sheltered Specialist, was looking for tenant volunteers. I joined the Environmental Improvement Group and, after hearing about the Red Kite Champion role, decided to give that a go too. I’ve now been a Champion for around two or three years.

Being a Champion is about keeping an eye on the communal areas where I live and reporting anything that needs attention, particularly grounds maintenance issues. It can be something as simple as spotting an overgrown sapling while I’m out and about.

I have a little dog, so I’m outside every day and can easily take photos of anything I notice. I fill in a form once a month and send it to Red Kite's Contracts Officer, so the role fits naturally into my routine.

What I enjoy most is feeling part of the team and the community. It keeps me active, gives me something worthwhile to focus on and helps me feel involved in where I live. I would recommend becoming a Red Kite Champion to tenants in other blocks who would like to get involved.

“Being a Red Kite tenant is about more than just having a home. There are lots of opportunities to get involved, have your say, and feel connected to where you live.”

  • Anyone who lives in one of our homes can apply to be a Red Kite Champion. If you're interested in joining, we'd love to hear from you. Find out more about the role.
