On Wednesday 30th September, some members of our Executive and Senior Leadership Teams attended a morning volunteering placement at the Grow Together allotments in Wycombe Marsh.
Red Kite has developed a strong working relationship with Grow Together over the years and has supported a number of their community projects through our community funding.
Grow Together has received support for two projects:
Community allotment – funding to improve accessibility for disabled residents and people with limited mobility, including wheelchair-friendly access and a dedicated raised-bed growing area
Loudwater Combined School – support to create a food-growing space for an after-school gardening club.
Both projects focus on making gardening and food growing more accessible and creating opportunities for local people and children to participate.
The Wednesday morning session came about as our Chief Executive Peter Cogan and Darren Mealings, our Chief Operating Officer, were due to participate at Grow Together back in July as part of our annual Community Morning event - but the Little Door Knock activity they were involved in that day took more time than anticipated! So we agreed to send a group out at a future date to support Grow Together with their fantastic work.
The teams cut back a tree, built up new vegetable bed borders, and created woodchip pathways between the growing spaces. The team loved the tranquillity of the site and were so impressed with the incredible volume of fresh food produced and the dedication of the volunteer network who support local people to connect both with nature and food.
