Smart Metering

Every British home will be offered a smart meter from their energy supplier. These new meters are designed to help reduce your energy costs by showing you exactly how much gas and electricity you're using and how much you're spending, all in real time.

The benefit of having a smart meter

Once you have a smart meter, it will mean an end to estimated bills. You'll only pay for the gas and electricity you actually use, as these new meters will send accurate readings directly to your energy supplier.

How much will a smart meter cost?

Smart meters don't cost you anything - and installation is free of charge too. There also won't be any additional charges on your energy bill once your new meter is fitted. In fact, thanks to the more accurate readings provided by a smart meter, you should end up saving money on your bills!

When you'll be getting a smart meter

This project to upgrade the whole of the UK to smart meters is going to take some time, as there are over 26 million homes to upgrade. When you will be upgraded depends on two factors:

  • Your energy supplier
  • Where you live

To find out more about when your energy supplier will be rolling out smart meters in your area, the Smart Energy GB website has more information.
