Home checks

Changes during COVID-19

Where possible, all home checks will be carried out virtually. If this is not possible, maybe because you don't have access to the right technology, we'll speak with you about the safest way for us to come and carry out your home check.

Why do you need to do a home check?

Home checks are an opportunity for us to meet with you again.  We'll be checking that your tenancy is okay, and to update you on what is happening at Red Kite.

What will we talk about?

First of all, we'll ask you some questions and then you'll have the opportunity to ask us some questions. We'll either answer them straight away, or come back to you at a later date.

We'll have a look around your home (inside and out) and take some photographs. We'll discuss any repairs or improvements that are needed, and we’ll make a note of any special features such as adaptations.

If you’ve updated your mobile number or email address, we'll take these details too - one less call for you to make.

We’ll also let you know about other services that you can access, which may be relevant to your circumstances - such as practical or financial help.

And finally, we’ll tell you how you can help shape the future of Red Kite.

Why do you need to see my home rather than just call?

We need to make sure that your home is safe, secure and being maintained. We also need to double check that our information on you is up to date. You have responsibilities as part of your agreement with Red Kite, and the home check gives us an opportunity to discuss these with you.

Can I refuse to see you?

No. We’re a nice group of people, honest. As your landlord we have a right to inspect our homes. When you signed your tenancy, you agreed to us visiting you.

What if I can’t make the appointment?

If you can’t make it, let us know and we'll re-arrange.  If you’ve called several times to re-arrange, we'll set a date in which you must allow us access. If you don’t, we may have to take legal action. We want to keep everyone happy in their homes, but we also have a job to do.

How long will it last?

We know your time is precious, so we won’t keep you any longer than we have to. We allow around 45 mins for each visit.

Can I ask someone else to be there too?

Of course. If you feel more comfortable with someone else being there with you, then that’s fine. We'll always need to see the person(s) named on the tenancy. If you are joint tenants and only one of you can be there, we'll do the visit and come back at a later date to make sure we've seen identification for both of you.
