By Active in the Community.

From September to December 2024, Active in the Community ran a 10-week women-only swimming programme which created a safe, inclusive space for women to learn swimming skills and build confidence in the water, thanks to the funding we received from Red Kite Community Housing’s Springboard fund.

Our initiative addressed significant barriers faced by women, particularly those from ethnic minority backgrounds, in accessing swimming opportunities.

Our key achievements:

  • Participation: 24 women participated, with an additional 16 on the waiting list
  • Skill development: Participants progressed from basic water safety to mastering strokes like front crawl and backstroke, with many achieving their goal of swimming independently
  • Accessibility: Sessions were kept affordable, costing only £8 per hour compared to local alternatives charging up to £35.40 per hour.

Our programme ensured privacy and comfort by using female instructors and lifeguards, private changing rooms, and an exclusively booked venue. These measures catered to cultural and religious needs, allowing all participants to swim confidently without compromising their values.

Beyond swimming, our programme encouraged a sense of community among participants, who supported each other in their progress. Many overcame long-standing fears of water, and some were inspired by their children’s swimming skills to join the programme.

Looking ahead

All spaces on our courses were filled within three hours, which highlights the need for programmes like this. We’ve got lots of plans and ideas for 2025, including mother-and-daughter sessions and intermediate classes.

This programme not only taught life-saving swimming skills but also empowered women and strengthened bonds. It’s a testament to the power of inclusive initiatives in making a lasting impact.

Thank you to Red Kite Community Housing for their support and funding.
