Providing a safe haven for homeless people

1 May 2015

A new initiative has given hope to local homeless people, thanks to a partnership we have started with Wycombe Homeless Connection. This innovative scheme sees certain empty homes that we own being let as a short-term base to people who have often been made homeless through job loss, relationship breakdown or financial troubles. The homes which would otherwise lie empty as they await redevelopment, will provide temporary accommodation while people access the support they need to get them back on track with their lives.

Specialist support for these short-term tenants will be provided by Wycombe Homeless Connection to make sure they quickly find alternative accommodation.

Wycombe Homeless Connection Chair of Trustees, Sheena Dykes said: “This is a really exciting project. Helping homeless people find accommodation is the first step for them to rebuild their lives. It will make an extraordinary difference that we can offer them a stable base for six months, so that they can get a job and become part of mainstream society again. I can’t say how grateful we are that Red Kite is helping us in this way.”

Shami Choudhury, Partnership Consultant from Red Kite, says: “We really support the work of Wycombe Homeless Connection: they are one of our nominated charities this year - so were really keen to find a way of helping out. As some of our homes are waiting for redevelopment are empty for just a short time, it made sense to work with Wycombe Homeless Connection and offer a safe place for local people who need it, as well as providing a way of protecting our empty homes from any anti-social behaviour which would then impact on our customers and communities. We’re so pleased to be able to help.”
