Housing benefit for new tenants

The Government is changing the way they calculate Housing Benefit and the housing element of Universal Credit. This means that if you put in a new claim for Housing Benefit, the amount you receive will be different to what you would have previously received.

By signing a new or renewed tenancy with Red Kite from 1st April 2016 (or 1st April 2017 for supported accommodation tenancies) you should be aware that the amount of Housing Benefit (or the Housing element of your Universal Credit) that you may receive could be restricted, starting on 1st April 2018.

We will be asking all our new tenants to sign and confirm that they understand this. When the amount of Housing Benefit (or the housing element of Universal Credit) they receive is capped to the Local Housing Allowance rate for the household size, they will need to make sure that they can pay the difference between their rent and the amount of benefit that they receive.

For example, if your rent was £100 and your Housing Benefit was capped at £75, you would have to pay the £25 difference when you pay your rent.
